Your Organization’s Cybersecurity Goes Beyond the Office

Phishing attacks are a type of social engineering attack where a malicious actor attempts to steal user data, credentials, or financial information. There are many forms of phishing attacks you may encounter as a remote worker; many actors have developed sophisticated methods to gain access to the information they are targeting. Corporations are at high risk for these attacks because malicious threat actors hope to gain sensitive company data through unsuspecting employees. It is up to you to be cautious and familiarize yourself with how your company communicates, what security procedures are in place, and to be cautious while opening emails and websites.

In this installment of our 4-part security series for remote workers, we will discuss popular phishing methods and indicators.

Key Takeaways to Spot Phishing Emails and Voice Phishing:

  • Malicious actors will try to trick remote employees over email, phone calls, fake websites, mobile applications, and more.
  • Voice Phishing or Vishing: This method of attack is becoming more prevalent because remote employees do not have an office system that indicates internal calls.
    • There are numerous examples right now of people getting phone calls from malicious actors pretending to be from the security or IT teams.
    • There are cases of emergency phone calls with key phrases like “Hey, this is Jen from IT. I really need you to send me your password.”
  • Phishing Emails: These attacks may happen when a malicious actor pretends to be someone you know or when they use a malicious link or attachment.
